Academic Excellence Program

Academic Excellence is a reading intervention program, offered by ECS, utilizing Alphabetic Phonics.

What is Alphabetic Phonics?

The alphabetic phonics approach is a systematic, multisensory method of instruction that focuses on the direct relationship between phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (letters or letter combinations). Through explicit teaching, students learn how sounds are represented in print and how to apply this knowledge to decode, encode, and understand words. This approach engages multiple senses—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—to strengthen learning and retention. Alphabetic phonics instruction integrates reading, handwriting, spelling, and both verbal and written expression, allowing skills to reinforce one another. Additionally, the program provides opportunities for teachers to model and implement comprehension strategies, ensuring that students are not only reading accurately but also developing meaning and understanding from text.

Alphabetic phonics instruction can be provided individually or in small groups, beginning as early as Kindergarten, to meet students’ specific learning needs. Sessions are taught four times per week and are delivered by a trained Literacy Therapist, Elizabeth Kuykendall, ensuring instruction is explicit, systematic, and responsive to each child’s progress. This structure allows for consistent practice, close monitoring, and targeted support to build a strong foundation in early literacy skills.
